To disinfect the skin, you can use Betadine liquid or cream (containing Povidone-iodine).Wash the Betadine off with tap water before you roll and don’t forget to clean your hands with soap before you touch your face. Do not use Betadine if pregnant or breastfeeding. Betadine is for sale in Pharmacies as well as online.
You can also use Chlorhexidine (around 2%).
To disinfect the roller or the skin, buy ethyl rubbing alcohol (ethanol = ethyl alcohol):

Do not use disinfection containing more than 80% alcohol because it evaporates too quickly and as such doesn’t have time to disinfect the skin properly. You can buy it but dilute it with water. It should be between 50% and 80%. Alcohols are most effective when combined with water to facilitate diffusion through the cell membrane; 100% alcohol typically denatures only external membrane proteins.
Do not reuse the alcohol used to sterilize the roller with. Pour some alcohol into a container, dip the roller into it and then discard the alcohol.
Concerning isopropyl alcohol:
I think it is better to use isopropyl alcohol in combination with ethanol.
We have two customers who soaked their roller in 70% isopropyl bought in a dollar store and their roller got loose needles (isopropyl is a solvent).
Other customers who used isopropyl did not experience this problem but I am not sure what percentage they used.
As a test, we soaked our dermaroller for 48 hours in 45% ethanol and 30% isopropyl without any problems whatsoever.

if some of you have problems as I have to find alcohol without Isopropanol or methylated spirits, I've asked Sarah if it's ok to use 95° alcohol that is used to make liquers.
She said yes, as long as you dilute it to 70% with distilled water and it does not contain sugar. For dilution I found an interesting table with quantities. this is the link, it's a pdf document and the table is in the very first page

It's in Italian but it's easy to read:
- vertical column: alcohol % desired
- top horizontal line: alcohol % you have available
- second horizontal line: quantity (ml) of distilled water to add to 100 ml of alcohol to delute it
For example, if you have 100 ml of 95% alcohol , you need to add 35.7 ml of distilled water to obtain 70% alcohol

Thank you for posting the table. It is very helpful. Just wanted to say that it doesn't have to be exactly 70% but around 70% and using tap water for dilution is also OK.
I did get a few emails telling me people found 70% alcohol for human consumption in the shop that was actually cheaper than 70% rubbing alcohol in the pharmacy.
I don't know why denatured alcohol is in some cases more expensive than alcohol for human consumption.
Denatured alcohol is ethanol that has additives such as methanol to make it unsuitable for consumption. The reason for making alcohol unsuitable for drinking is to provide very cheap alcohol for industrial or other purposes (as a solvent, for cleaning etc).
Rubbing alcohol is usually denatured with isopropanol. You cannot drink it and it should be cheap.
I am not sure whether rubbing alcohol containing only ethanol and water is denatured, but I guess so.
Alcohol for human consumption can certainly be used on the skin or dermaroller disinfection. Just make sure there is no sugar, caramel etc. and that it contains at least 50% alcohol, preferably more.
Vodka routinely contains only 40% ethanol and 60% water. This is insufficient for reliable disinfection.

I'm glad you found the table useful.
I've just bought 1 liter of pure ethanol 95%, with no sugar at the supermarket which cost about 12 Euros. Maybe it's not cheap, but mixed with water should last a while. I actually got to this solution because I went to several pharmacies here in Milan and they actually do have denatured alcohol, the usual very cheap pink colour alcohol, but it either has a high content of isopropanol or methylated stuff in it.
I read somewhere about using the sterilizing liquid utilized for baby bottles for disinfecting dermarollers, what do you think about it?

Could I just use dettol anti-bacterial wipes to clean the skin instead of betadine? If i use betadine then I just rinse off before rolling?

Yes you can use Dettol but wash it off before you roll.

Is the Betadine SKIN CLEANSER just as good to use as the Betadine antiseptic solution?
Seems the Chloramine-T is better than 70%, but, are you saying that the 70% ethyl alcohol can be used to clean the face as well as the roller?

Betadine skin cleanser and Betadine antiseptic solution contain the same antiseptic substance: Povidone iodine. It may slightly vary in percentage but they are both OK for skin disinfection.
Yes, Ethanol can be used both for skin and dermaneedling instrument disinfection.
Disinfecting the dermaneedling instrument after dermarolling is more important than disinfecting the skin before dermarolling. The most important part of the disinfection is to clean the dermarolling instrument after dermarolling with dishwashing detergent and warm water and rinse it under a very strong stream of water to remove blood and skin debris from the needles. Then soak it in Chloramine-T or Ethanol.

Hi Sarah,
I recently bought a bottle of 50% Isopropyl Alcohol that I wanted to use to disinfect my face prior to dermarolling. Can I just dip a cotton ball and swab my face, or should I dilute it with a bit of water prior to applying it to my face?

No, don't dilute it - even 50% is a bit on the low side so definitely use it undiluted.

I have grain alcohol for drinking that I purchased at the liquor store it is 375 ml bottle. It is called Everclear it says 75.5% alc/vol (151) Proof. 3 questions:
Do I need to dilute this?
If so how many ml of water should I add to the 375 ml to dilute to 70%?
If I don't need to dilute it can I use it to disinfect my skin, derma rollers and derma stamp?

We sell Chloramine-T for disinfection purposes and there is a chapter on alcohol as a disinfectant in our dermarolling instructions.
So, even though your question is off-topic in this product support forum, I'll answer it: Yes, 75% is OK to use on body and instruments.
